History

Recently retired from the position of District Superintendent of Education for the South East District, Department of Education, Training and Employment. Prior to the superintendency (1995-2002) I held Principal positions at Millicent North and Jamestown (1974-94). In the same period I conducted advisory work with the Fijian Government on 2 occasions, assisted with the redevelopment of the professional development policy for the Department and several short term acting positions as a Principal Education Officer. From 1969-73 I was a Science Consultant for the then Education Department and travelled widely introducing staff to the new Primary Science Course to which I had contributed as part of a team.

My first years of teaching from 1960-64 were at Kingston and Lameroo where I taught Physics, Chemistry, General Science, Mathematics and some English. I left Lameroo to work as a Demonstration Teacher at Linden Park Demonstration School.

Parallel to this experience is the development of skills in the computing arena. Whilst superintendent I led a number of the innovations for senior staff of the Department in the area of ICT. I developed the use of email lists for superintendents and their support staff, lobbied for and supported their training to achieve a more effective communication system than that which existed at the time and contributed to the debate and process for introducing Internet access for schools. I was the primary contact point for ICT among the Superintendents and also provided information to committeess examining ICT and school finances. Locally, the South East District was developed into a leader in the field through my encouragement and promotion.

On a personal learning level I became interested in the use of computing to support education and learned to program first in Basic, then Assembler, then Turbo Pascal. The first program to be used widely in the education community was TRT.EXE (Reliever Link for DOS) and this caused a revolution in the way temporary relieving teachers were employed.

Recently a move to the Delphi has meant the development of Reliever Link for Windows.

Training and development of staff coupled with an effective performance management process is the key to educational leadership. To achieve this a leader must be informed about the learning processes of both students and staff and hold the respect of staff.

As a superintendent I developed a process for the review of principals and schools. A recent example of my work was a review of the Millicent Combined Schools Orchestra that provided new information and direction for that group.
